Sophia carried the last of her boxes up the front steps of Rosewood Hall to her brand new room. Her mother had just helped her finish moving in the rest of her stuff, her father had been away helping Gabriel get settled into his own dorm room. The first time she had walked into the dorm she was surprised by the size. It wasn’t that much smaller than her bedroom back home. Sophia had expected it to be much worse from the way that television and movies had portrayed it.
Sophia didn’t know when to expect her roommate but she was at least hoping that she would have a little time to clean up before she arrived. Sophia and her mother had left boxes all over the room and she didn’t want her roommates first impression of her to be that she was a horrible slob. She quickly worked her way through her clothing boxes trying to get them put away into the small dresser that they had placed at the end of the twin beds. She wasn’t sure if all her clothes would fit, but she was determined to make it happen. The rest of her stuff was mostly books, and sports supplies. She wasn’t to worried about where to put them. Sophia had forced her mother to take her to Ikea early in order to get under the bed organizers. She would just throw whatever she didn’t have a place for under there.
Sophia began to worried what her roommate was going to be like. According to the paperwork she had gotten from the student housing department her roommate was to be another freshman named Guinevere Hawkins. But that was all the information she had been able to get about her. She had been meaning to reach out to her our social media this summer but had been too busy with her soccer team, and it had just slipped her mind. Now she wished she had forced herself to do so. At least then she wouldn’t be going into the new school year completely blind.
She briefly wondered if she should tell her roommate about her being gay. She had known a couple girls in her high school that hadn’t like sharing a locker room with her. She could only imagine how they would have reacted if they had been forced to share a room with her. She had been lucky that her other friends had been willing to stand up to the snoddy girls for her. But her, at Martin, she would be on her own. ‘How do you even bring it up.’ She thought to herself, ‘Hello I’m Sophia. I’m your roommate and also I’m gay. Hope you don’t hate me.’ Yeah that would go over well. She looked up at the clock, her roommate should be arriving anytime now. She would only have a little while more to figure out how to deal with that. At least most of her stuff was put away now. The room no longer looked like hurricane Sophia had come rampaging through.

The beginning of university meant that there were a great many changes in store for Guin. First and foremost she was moving away from the city that she had grown up in, leaving behind many of the people that she had befriended over the years. Her brother had managed to convince her that it would be good for her to leave Toronto behind. There were too many bad memories living there now. She needed a fresh start, and their uncle would make sure that they were given exactly that. But there was still the underlying feeling of guilt that ate away at her stomach when she thought about two of the people she had loved most in the world. Two people who were back in Toronto...never to leave the city again. Guin had been into the dorms a few days prior thanks to special arrangement from the dean, having managed to unpack and organize almost all of her things before her roommate was due to arrive. She needed something to do with her time. Any moments that were not occupied by her new job or her need to sleep had been dedicated to the idea of creating some kind of order to her side of the room. But there had been no real joy in doing so. All of the posters she had thought she might put up on the walls remained rolled up and stored safely in her closet space. Her desk was neatly organized, her books stacked on the shelves in straight rows...it was the perfect picture of someone who suffered from OCD. Even though Guin didn't suffer from it at all. Unsteady fingers moved through her hair as she pulled the elastic out and let her locks tumble down her back. Another shift at the cafe had come to an end. Things had been put away, coffee had been served...and now Guin really just wanted to crawl into a hot shower before she fell face first into her bed. Yet it seemed that the universe had other plans for her... She paused in the doorway, taking note of the boxes that hadn't been there when she had left for work. Guin knew what that meant. Her roommate had arrived. And it didn't look like the girl had been able to do to much organizing at all. "Um..h-hi." Her dark orbs darted to the girl who stood inside the room, her stomach suddenly feeling rather uncomfortable. She had known all along that she wasn't going to have the room to herself because there were just too many people for the school not to use all of the available spaces. But Guin hadn't exactly thought about how little time she would have to herself before said roommate would appear and the process of occupying the same living space would begin. "You must be Sophia?" she asked her quietly, stepping into the room and immediately moving toward her things. At least those were familiar to her. Those were things she felt comfortable around. "I'm Guin..."Oh hell, she was already making such a mess of this. WORD COUNT: 520 TAGGED: SOPHIA TORRES

‘This is useless.’ Sophia thought as she tried to turn the pile of shoes she had dumped at the end of her bed into some form of organized chaos. Right now it just looked like a mountain of sneakers and cleats had taken over the far end of the dorm room. She didn’t have too many shoes, just enough to make trying to fit them in a small space like this difficult. She hoped that she could at least get most of her mess cleaned up before her roommate arrived but at the rate she was going she wasn’t sure. Sophia just hoped that if her roommate were to suddenly show up she would at least understand the mess. It wasn’t as if they were given a huge amount of space, and Sophia’s own room back home wasn’t exactly what you would call tidy. Not that she was going to be a slob.
She had finally found a semi-decent way to store her shoes when she was startled by a voice. Turning around she saw a pretty girl with dark brown hair standing in the doorway. ‘Dang it.’ She thought she knew the room was still a huge mess, and felt bad about the state she had left it in. “Hi.” Sophia greeted the other girl. She was surprised at how nervous she was not that Guin was actually here.
Sophia hadn’t even been able to come out with an appropriate approach to the sexuality issue. Or maybe she should just ignore it for now. It was like she had to come out to everyone she meet. The only thing she was worried about was Guin eventually finding out and feeling uncomfortable around her. It would be best if she just told her outright. She just wasn’t sure how. She knew most college students were supposed to be more open minded, but during high school she had found out just how nasty people could be about things like this. Sophia just hoped that Guin wasn’t one of those people.
“Nice to meet you.” Sophia said extending her arm for a handshake. She wasn’t sure if that was the most appropriate way of greeting, but her father had always put a huge emphasis on manner. She just didn’t want to mess up the first meeting with the person that she was going to be sharing a room with or the next year. “Sorry about the mess.” Sophia hoped that Guin wasn’t too horrified with the state of the room. “I promise I’ll have it tidied up before the end of the day.” She wasn’t sure it that was possible but she would at least be able to have it in a livable state but the end of today.
