Her afternoon class had long ended and now Danielle wanted nothing more than to enjoy her free time. She had a whole weekend to worry about her looming assignments and she believed she deserved a break. It had been a long afternoon – not helped with her lack of sleep and a hangover that loomed like a dark cloud. Cringing as last night’s flashbacks seeped into her thoughts she rolled her eyes and wandered if she could get away with drowning herself in the school fountain.
Who the hell pole danced to bad eighties rock songs. This girl, THIS GIRL RIGHT HERE. She never wanted to hear Def leppard again ever. She never wanted to drink jagermeister again. She would never step foot in that dingy downtown club again (well that one was a lie she loved that place). Sighing dramatically Danielle turned her attention back to her work – she needed a distraction. Being alone with her thoughts right now was not the best place to be.
She cringed and hid her face in her binder the plastic was cool against her skin and as she tucked herself against one of the large columns of the courtyard hidden away from the world she felt her anxiety begin to slip away. Frowning at the contents of her binder she took a pen from her bag and began elaborating on the short hand notes she’d made during her class. Which really hadn’t been all that bad after all practical lessons were never boring and she enjoyed the hands on experience – it had been especially hilarious when Bobby the professor’s assistant had thrown up in the paper bin. How weak.
Sighing Danielle leant against the stone column ignoring the world as it passed by with the sun shining down her headphones on and the smooth sound of Fleetwood mac playing in her ears Danielle could be anywhere else in the world if she imagined it.

It was Friday afternoon and Kylie had just finished class. ‘Freedom’ she thought to herself, as she began packing up her books into her bag. Heading out of the building Kylie couldn’t help but smile, she loved the fresh air. Luckily the weather was nice out today, and Kylie grabbed a pair of sunglasses from her bag. Kylie wasn’t sure what she was going to get up to this weekend but she figured it would be a good weekend regardless.
Walking on the path towards the courtyard, Kylie decided to check her phone. She had received some new emails, ‘lame’ she thought to herself before checking her facebook news feed. Kylie scrolled through the posts as she walked, hoping for something good. Disappointed with all the drama, Kylie didn’t fully understand why people posted so much of their personal lives online but perhaps that was because she didn’t have much to post about.
Walking down the path a little further, Kylie thought she saw Danielle. Kylie waved at Danielle before she realised she was off in her own world in that moment. ‘It’s crazy how someone like her, is friends with someone like me’ Kylie thought to herself as she walked over towards Danielle. The two had become really good friends as of late and Kylie couldn’t be happier, she knew people thought the two of them as friends was odd but she didn’t care. Danielle was a party girl, socialite who Kylie admired so much, she was thankful to have a friend like Danielle as it gave her the confidence to become a more social person, something that was Kylie’s goal since she got to school.
Getting close enough to see she had her headphones in Kylie came up with a brilliant idea. ‘I’m going to scare her’ she thought to herself, she just hoped that Danielle hadn’t seen her yet. Changing her course so she would come up behind Danielle, Kylie began walking more stealthily, not wanting to tip her off. Once she was close enough to Danielle, she made a jumping gesture as gently nudged Danielle while screaming “BOO!” Kylie knew she was lame sometimes, she just didn’t care. She just chuckled as other people looked at the two of them, then she turned her attention back to Danielle.

For a moment she continued to wallow pulling a sour face Danielle wanted nothing more than to curl up into a small little ball and disappear. Well at least until the next party – she supposed. She sighed as Stevie Nicks soul filled voice filled her ears. Thank god for Stevie, an angel who helped Danielle through the toughest of times. Times like these for example. Smiling softly the peace was broken and a rippling squeal pierced the courtyard when a hand grabbed her shoulder making the young brunette jump. Dark eyes widened and notepad flew through the air landing in a clatter on the ground.
“Jesus Christ Kyles you want to give me a heart attack?” she asked though she was unable to keep the smile from her face. Kylie Biggs was one of her favourite people – sweet natured and a talented artist Danielle wanted nothing more than to wrap her red headed friend in bubble wrap and keep her from the horrors of the world. That was of course she wasn’t encouraging Kylie to involve herself in certain drink fuelled vices… She refused to believe she was an enabler she was simply helping Kylie become the social butterfly Danielle knew she was inside. Deep down.
“Kylie I got white girl wasted again,” she whined putting her head on her friends shoulder dramatically “why oh why, do I do these things.”
At least no one had seen – or so she hoped. The last thing she needed was the likes of Hartley sneering at her – though in all fairness they’d be no change there. It had been a while since the two had argued she was beginning to get bored.
“So how have your classes been this morning?” she asked making room for Kylie on the ledge she’d been curled up on.
“We had the fun job of dissecting today – which was actually really interesting.” She mused “well until the T.A threw up. Pathetic really.” she laughed. "I suppose it roots out the weak." she said with an evil smirk.

Kylie watched for a moment as Danielle jumped in fright and let out a rippling sequeal in the courtyard. After a moment had passed and Danielle was able to clearly see Kylie standing on the other side of her, she began to let out a laugh. Kylie was sometimes known for her terrible humor. She thought she was being hilarious, regardless of whether or not Danielle thought the same thing. Kylie did it because deep down she knew Danielle found it funny, that was one of the things she enjoyed about her friendship with Danielle so much, her sense of humour.
“Should I call an ambulance?” Kylie asked sarcastically. She knew her friend was fine and was waiting for Danielle to threaten to pretend beat her up. Kylie still wasn’t sure how she had gotten to lucky-a socialite like Danielle Winters was friends with her. Friendship was all Kylie had ever wanted, and now she not only had a friend. Danielle was a social butterfly who was helping Kylie break out of her shell and enjoy the party side of life that Kylie was always too afraid to enjoy on her own. She could never repay Danielle for that.
Hearing Danielle mention getting white girl wasted again happened to make Kylie chuckle, she knew Danielle would be feeling upset about this party until the next party came and she did something else as equally or more ‘embarrassing’ as Danielle would call it. “Tell me about the party, did you have fun?” Kylie asked as she slipped her arm around her friends shoulders and gave her a slight squeeze for support. She was sure that whatever Danielle had done couldn’t have been that bad.
Seeing Danielle make room for her on the ledge, Kylie walked over and sat down on the ledge next to Danielle. Moments like this were Kylie’s favourite, she enjoyed being able to catch up with her best friend while being outdoors and enjoying the sunshine. “Class was the usual, worked on some drawings if you’d like to see” Kylie asked, she already knew the answer-yes. Danielle loved Kylie’s drawings, and Kylie loved how much Danielle enjoyed her drawings. It was nice to have a friend who enjoyed her talents as much as she did. Hearing Danielle discuss her class made Kylie realise she was glad she was in animation and not biology. “Yuck, what did you dissect?” Kylie asked intrigued. Hearing that someone actually threw up made Kylie giggle, she knew if she was in biology that would be her. She didn’t handle blood and gore extremely well, she blamed it on her ‘being a hippie’ thing. “That’s exactly why I’m not in biology” Kylie joked, she was glad her and Danielle were so different, it’s what made their friendship so unique.
