Hartley glanced down at her watch upon entering Lola’s bakery. The bright numbers read 7:15 which explained why the bakery was so empty. Most students would either already be heading to class or wouldn’t even be up for another couple of hours. She herself didn’t have class until later this afternoon but she was trying to get herself back in the school schedule and away from the late nights and sleeping till noon of the summer.
Lola’s smelled delicious and Hartley couldn’t help but smile. Lola’s bakery had become a regular breakfast spot for her during the previous school year, and she had missed it terribly this summer. She didn’t know what they put in their coffee but she suspected it must be crack as she couldn’t find anywhere in Vancouver that even came close to the wonderful taste of Lolas. Plus the bagels here were to die for.
Hartley was glad at the emptiness of the bakery as she would actually be able to find a seat this morning in the small building. It mostly dealt in take out but had a couple of small tables for people to enjoy their food at, and she wasn’t quite ready to go back to her dorm room just yet. She had brought her laptop so she could go over her schedule and figure out what homework needed to be completed for this week, and Lola’s was the perfect place to do so.
Hartley finally reached the cashier as a middle age man grabbed his coffee and nearly bowled her over on his way out the door. “Hey.” She screamed in annoyance, but he was already gone, probably late to his own job in town. She turned to the young man working the register and order her regular, a medium coffee with cream and two sugars. As well as the everything bagel with cream cheese she had been craving all summer.
It only took a few moments before her order was ready and she placed herself at the small table in the window. She pulled out her laptop and began to organize the homework she would need to begin if she wanted to stay on top of things. First things first she needed to prepare a monologue for next friday’s class.
